A man is behind bars in connection with shooting his father on Tuesday morning at the son’s residence northeast of Bailey, authorities said.
Justin Dane Bailey, 36, of the 4100 block of Stoney Hill Church Road, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury to William Bailey, Capt. Eddie Moore of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office said.
Justin Bailey is jailed under a $500,000 secured bond in the Nash County Detention Center, Moore said.
The shooting occurred about 10:50 a.m. after William Bailey and Justin Bailey had gotten into a verbal altercation, Moore said.
The emergency operator received a call from the Stoney Hill Church Road address about a person having been shot, Moore said.
Deputies and Bailey police officers found William Bailey lying on the ground in the back yard of the residence, Moore said.
William Bailey was responsive and appeared to have been shot in the chest, Moore said.
William Bailey was taken by Nash County Emergency Medical Services to WakeMed, where his status is unknown at this time, Moore said.
Justin Bailey, who still was at the shooting scene, was taken into custody and to the sheriff’s office for questioning by detectives, Moore said.
Detectives learned that during the altercation, Justin Bailey had produced a handgun and shot William Bailey, Moore said.
Detectives are continuing to conduct a probe, but no other charges are expected unless William Bailey’s medical status changes, Moore said.
Justin Bailey is due on Thursday in Nash County District Court, Moore said.
