SPRING HOPE — Town residents looking for a license plate no longer will have to drive to Rocky Mount or Wilson.

A new license plate agency opened on Tuesday in Spring Hope.

The new agency, located at 123 S. Ash St., will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except for state holidays.

The location offers vehicle registration services and title transactions as well as vehicle license plate renewals, replacement tags and duplicate registrations, said John Brockwell, spokesman for the state Division of Motor Vehicles, which has 128 license plate agencies statewide.

The agency does not provide driver’s license services.

The agency, which is operated by the Spring Hope Area Chamber of Commerce, is located in the former Southside Pharmacy in an area with empty storefronts. The hope is the presence of the agency will spur growth and see businesses move into stores, according to chamber representatives.

The chamber looked at the two shopping centers on Nash Street but the rent was too high, according to the nonprofit chamber.

New employees underwent three weeks of training prior to the agency opening and DMV trainers also will be at the site for about a week.

Timothy Johnson left in January his town administrator post in Bailey to run the agency. He said he is enjoying his time in Spring Hope.

Folks in rural areas with a long drive to an agency or who do not have internet to conduct business with the DMV online will find the Spring Hope agency to be very convenient, Johnson said.

Spring Hope resident Bob Lewis said he is happy to see the agency open downtown.

“I used to go to Zebulon, but who wants to drive that far if you can get it done in town,” Lewis said. “I think it’s great. Now we just need a couple more restaurants.”

The Spring Hope License Plate Agency’s phone number is 252-291-2073. Services such as property tax payments and registration renewals can be completed online at www.MyNCDMV.gov.
