Area residents can support the work of Communities in Schools of the Rocky Mount Region this Thursday simply by eating out at one of 55 participating area restaurants.

The annual Communities in Schools Dine Out event is one of the biggest fundraisers for the nonprofit organization each year. This year is the 23rd year of the event in which participating restaurants contribute 10 percent of their total sales that day to the work of Communities in Schools. Since the Dine Out event began in 1997, more than $280,000 has been raised through the effort.

“The idea for Dine Out actually was created by the business community,” said Dorothy Hinton, director of community partnerships and programs for the organization. “All people have to do to support us is to eat at one of the restaurants.”

Communities in Schools is dedicated to the mission to “surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.”  In 2016, the organization worked nine Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools. This year, it is working with almost every school in the district, providing mentoring, tutoring, encouragement and other supports to keep at-risk students in school and on track for graduation. Last year, 100% of high school seniors working with Communities in Schools crossed the finish line.

“We use evidence-based strategies to help students set goals and improve their behavior,” Hinton said.
