Marianne Miranda was on the verge of shutting down Miranda’s Sweet Addictions, a small local bakery in Rocky Mount.

Miranda, who has relocated the store to 1137 Jeffreys Road in the Benvenue Plaza Shopping Center, opened the specialty bake shop that’s known for selling homemade wedding cakes and sweet treats at a location on Sunset Avenue.

While the ongoing road construction to widen U.S. 301 has been touted to improve safety and congestion, Miranda said the closure of the Sunset Avenue bridge for the construction turned out to be a huge detriment to her business. She said her walk-in traffic became virtually non-existent. Although Miranda was getting online orders, she said that wasn’t enough to support the business.

“My business went down 50 percent, and for two months in a row I wasn’t seeing one car stop by my business,” Miranda said. “A lot of my walk-ins or the busiest part of my day would be lunch time. Customers who work downtown were able to come straight to the bakery, get something sweet to eat and go back to work in time. But with the construction, they were having to go around — that took longer than usual and people’s time for lunch would be gone. That roadwork really hurt my business. I was paying $1,500 a month for rent and no traffic was coming to my business.”

Just as she was ready to let the business go, Miranda said, Greg Williams, landlord of the Benvenue Plaza Shopping Center, came into the bakery one day. He talked to Miranda about whether she was interested in becoming a tenant in the plaza and told her he had the perfect location for the bakery.

Miranda said it was almost like divine intervention for Williams to come into Miranda’s Sweet Addictions.

“I pay less rent here and (Williams) is an amazing landlord,” Miranda said. “I don’t know if I was lucky or it was meant to be.”

Miranda said her new 1,300-square-foot location is smaller than her previous spot at 1,800 square feet.  A unique addition Miranda added to the new location is a nursing area for new mothers in the back.

“I used to nurse my baby, and it’s a little awkward when your baby wants to eat and you can’t nurse them,” Miranda said. “This keeps them from having to leave.”

Miranda’s Sweet Addictions will continue to offer a variety of goodies to satisfy the sweet tooth from simple cupcakes to dream wedding cakes. Miranda said something new she’s selling at the new location is 12 different flavors of Hershey ice cream.

Contrary to the former location, Miranda’s Sweet Addictions is surrounded by a variety of different businesses and tenants in the Benvenue Plaza Shopping Center, which includes the Englewood Barbershop next door.

The barbershop, which has been a staple in Rocky Mount for more than 30 years, has several customers that have been known to stroll over and patronize the bakery since it opened in June.

Englewood Barbershop owners Tommy Waters and Chris Adams have also become big fans of the desserts at Miranda’s Sweet Addictions. Adams said his favorite treat is the banana pudding and that the locally-owned bakery is a strong asset to the shopping center.

“I believe her place has a lot of staying power because she offers some good-tasting treats,” Adams said. “A lot of our customers coming to the shop become curious about what’s over there because you can smell the aroma before you come in. They go over there and usually leave with something. I think this is a good situation where we both are going to be able to complement one another.”

Miranda’s Sweet Addictions is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
