Letter to the Editor: Authoritarianism is not an American value

Al-Baghdadi is dead.

His Islamic followers lined up Americans and cut their heads off, just because they would not bow to radical Islamic beliefs. They burned a Jordanian pilot to death, alive, and videoed it to make their evil behavior public. They also burned two Turkish soldiers alive captured in the fight for Syria. How many more?

According to CBS News, Islamist extremism caused 84,000 deaths worldwide in 2017, a new report says. Overall, Muslims were the most frequent victims of deadly attacks. These evil people hiding behind “religion” don’t hesitate to kill their own family if they disagree with them.

Any group of people or government who wants to destroy someone just because they think differently than they is authoritarian (favoring or enforcing strict obedience to authority, especially that of the government, at the expense of personal freedom).

The Washington Post has rightly received a lot of backlash over their headline on the death of Baghdadi. Its original headline read, “Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Islamic State’s ‘terrorist-in-chief,’ dies at 48.” But it was later changed to, “Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, austere religious scholar at helm of Islamic State, dies at 48.”

Some media outlets could not bring themselves to celebrate such a victorious takedown of a man responsible for murdering masses of innocent people just because he viewed them as infidels.

The media found plenty of criticism for President Trump who gave the order to go in and take the murderer out, but it was hard for them to come up with a headline other than an “austere religious scholar” for wicked Baghdadi. This is what happens when people allow hate to consume them.

The God I serve created a free people. Our Declaration of Independence and Constitution promote freedom, not authoritarianism.

Members of Congress take this oath of office: “I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic ... So help me God.”

If a person wants to take your guns, your freedom of speech, your freedom of religion, etc. (read our Constitution) and is going to take the oath of office, you know he or she is a liar.

Proverbs 6:16 tells us there are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to Him: A lying tongue is one of the things He hates.
