Letter to the Editor: Graham right to support Trump
Sunday, May 12, 2019
I feel led to respond to the letter published in the Telegram on April 4 by Merrell Washington titled “Graham no true Christian.”
Mr./Ms. Washington felt that Franklin Graham should repent for saying that Mayor Buttigieg should repent for being gay. Reverend Graham was only relying on God’s Word (Bible) for his position on homosexuality. It clearly states in Leviticus 18:22 that “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.” However, it should be noted that God’s condemnation of homosexuality is included along with the greedy, drunkards, thieves, liars, murderers and other sins in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 and 1 Timothy 1:8-11.
Mr./Ms. Washington also stated that President Trump “is the most sinful person to have ever inherited the White House during my lifetime.” I don’t know how old he or she is, but I seem to remember not too many years ago a president performing sexual acts in the Oval Office! Also, murder is listed among the sins and to my knowledge, a host of presidential candidates support the murder of innocent babies in and outside the womb.
Finally, Mr./Ms. Washington seems to base the President’s Christianity on the premise that he cannot recite the Apostle’s Creed, the Lord’s Prayer or the 23rd Psalm. I do not know whether President Trump is a professed Christ follower or not but I do know that memorizing these things are not going to get you to Heaven. Romans 10:9-10 tells us that the only way to Heaven and eternal life is “…if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”
Though the title of the piece mentioned Reverend Graham, it was really a condemnation of our president. I do agree with Mr./Ms. Washington that the president’s language and tweets are not what I would like to hear from my president. However, that would exclude many of our past presidents.
I support the president because of his policies and what he has been able to accomplish with the economy, the Supreme Court justices he has been able to place on the court and his stance on abortion. No one is perfect. That’s why God sent us a Savior to wash away our sins.
