Letter to the Editor: Face disaster with humility

Wednesday, October 10, 2018

When there is a hurricane or other natural disaster, people ask God why He allows such things to happen.

Can a person know God and why He does what He does? Yes, under certain conditions. He will reveal as much of Himself as a person will use to honor Him. Bible examples are Abraham, Moses, David, Isaiah and Paul. Modern examples are: Billy Graham, Adrian Rogers, Charles Stanley and others.

The Old Testament describes God's judgment on His chosen race, whom He blessed abundantly, but in time rejected him and worshipped idols. They faced all kinds of terrible disasters— which were deserved. Our new Christian nation began the right way, just as Israel did. Then our people began rejecting Him. We are seeing His judgment, which we deserve. A loving Father chastens His wayward children (Hebrews 12:6). God controls nature and will use it to fulfill His purposes.

He provided everything we need on this planet and instructed mankind to take care of it. He wants a personal relationship with us. How can you have a relationship with someone you don't know? You cannot know God without the Bible — written by and revealed by His Spirit. Paul said we should strive to have the mind of Christ (Philippians 2:5). With that attitude, we can receive what He wants to reveal to us. My church’s mission statement is, "Knowing God, making God known, and becoming like His Son, Jesus Christ ..." We can never completely know God, or we would be God. Our finite minds can never grasp the whole scope of the sovereign, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent holy God.

Job experienced total devastation — not due to anything he had done, but after asking God why, humbled himself and received twice as much as he had before. Isn't God trying to humble us to get rid of pride and self sufficiency? Joni Eareckson Tada, a quadriplegic for 51 years due to a diving accident, after asking why, humbled herself in her wheelchair. Never seeking fame or glory for herself, but for God, she learned to draw and paint by mouth, recorded her beautifully sung music, authored many books, has a daily radio program, sponsors family retreats for families with handicapped children, ships wheelchairs with the gospel to many countries through her ministry — Joni and Friends. Amazing what God can accomplish through adversity when we are yielded to Him.
