THURSDAY'S PREP ROUNDUP: Nash Central tennis tops SWE in EPC opener

The Nash Central tennis team improved to 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in Eastern Plains play on Thursday afternoon at home by sweeping SouthWest Edgecombe, 9-0.

On the season, the Bulldogs have beaten Northern Nash while losing twice to Southern Nash and once to Rocky Mount High.

On Thursday, No. 1 seed Cameron Johnson improved to 5-0 in singles play on the season, while Isaiah Hernandez, Israel Brown, Keshav Patel, Elijah Brown and Gabriel Woodard also picked up singles victories.

EPC play continues for Nash Central next Tuesday at home against Wilson Beddingfield, before another non-conference rivalry game with Rocky Mount High the following Wednesday. 

Boys’ tennis

Southern Nash 8, Northern Nash 1

The Firebirds improved to 7-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Big East with a victory at home over rival Northern Nash (2-3, 0-2) on Thursday.

For Southern Nash, Dylan Allgood, Hector Perez, David Vazquez, Adolfo Gonzalez and Michael Hernandez all picked up singles victories.

The lone win on the day for the Knights came from Owen Hans in singles action.


Faith Christian 20, Wilson Community Christian 1 (5 inn.)

Hosting Wilson Community Christian on Thursday afternoon, Faith Christian scored early and often to take an abbreviated victory to improve to 2-0.

For the Patriots, Emma Cate Griffin picked up second win of the season, throwing four innings against WCC. Logan Ayers pitched the final inning and struck out the side.

FCS this season is being coached by Mike Leonard, who returns after coaching the team for 10 years in the late 1990s and 2000s.

The Patriots, who have a young roster this spring led by Ayers and Savannah Langley, will look to improve to 3-0 on Friday afternoon at home against Wayne Christian at 4 p.m.

SouthWest Edgecombe 11, Hertford County 6

The SouthWest Edgecombe softball team, on the road against Hertford County on Thursday, scored one run in the second, four in the third and five in the fourth innings to secure a five-run victory, improving its record to 2-2 on the young season.

The other win for the Cougars this year came on March 5, an 11-9 decision over Rocky Mount High.

Girls’ soccer

Wilson Community Christian 3, Faith Christian 2 (PKs)

The Faith Christian girls’ soccer team fell to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in conference on Thursday at home after falling in a penalty shootout.

The game was tied at two entering the shootout, with the Patriots scoring twice in the second half to send the game to penalty kicks, where WCC won the shootout, 2-1.

Rocky Mount Academy 5, Christ Covenant 1

The Eagles (3-1) picked up a lopsided victory on Thursday afternoon against Christ Covenant, scoring two goals in the first half another three in the second.
