A guide to this weekend's state swim meet

The state swimming championships begin on Friday for Class 3A, and continue Saturday for 1A/2A.
The meet is held at Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, and prelims begin at 9 a.m. each day, with finals starting around 4:45 p.m. Note: The 500-yard freestyle and 400 freestyle relay events will only compete during the finals portion of the day.
Each event has 24 qualifiers, and Rocky Mount High has filled six events for Friday’s meet, while Nash Central and Tarboro each have qualifiers for Saturday’s meet.
Here’s a look at what’s happening each day.
Friday — Prelims 9 a.m., Finals 4:45 p.m.
The Gryphons’ Jenna Lavely owns the 24th seed in the 50 freestyle (26.79). Clara Lord, the other RMH individual qualifier, is seeded 22nd in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.19).
RMH also qualified two girls and two boys relays. The girls will compete in the 200 medley relay (2:05.74) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:51.25), and are seeded 24th and 22nd, respectively.
The Gryphons boys relay teams will swim the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.75) and the 400 freestyle relays (3:52.66). They’re seeded 24th and 22nd, respectively.
Saturday — Prelims 9 a.m., Finals 4:45 p.m.
Nash Central will be represented in five races, including a pair of relay events. Tarboro’s Jack Lancaster will also swim.
Bulldogs freshman Lance Norris will swim the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle, while Sarah Hicks will compete in the 50-yard freestyle. The Bulldogs’ girls will also swim the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
Norris owns the top seed in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.57, which is nearly four seconds faster than the next qualifier. In the 500, Norris holds the second seed with a time of 4:44.41. Newton-Conover senior and N.C. State commit Ross Dant holds the top time in the event (4:27.31).
Hicks is seeded 20th in the 50 free (26.12).
The Nash Central girls’ 200 freestyle relay (1:51.43) is seeded 21st out of 24, while the 400 freestyle relay (4:15.10) is seeded 24th.
Tarboro’s Jack Lancaster, is the 16 seed in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.10. He is one of 19 swimmers to break one minute in the race.
