The ladies of the Rocky Mount chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. are celebrating their 97th Founders’ Day on Tuesday.
Activities during the month include a rededication ceremony, a breakfast meeting, providing food and clothing to families in this service area and a service donation to a church.
Members of the local chapter live in Rocky Mount, Tarboro and Wilson.
A moment of recognition was given to the local founders of the Rocky Mount chapter (Beta Zeta Sigma) of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority: the late sorors Annie Whitehead Neville, Mary Phillips Boddie, Anniedelle Battle Armstrong, Thelma Stokes, Annie Wimberly Battle, Lucille Battle Davis Hagan, Mary Lunceford Backus, Catherine Johnson, Lula Walker Reeves and Ida Westry Gaynor.
A rosebud of thanks was given to our sick- and -shut-in members at this time: sorors Martha Noel, Evelyn Lawrence, Genotre Penny-Boone, Maggie Gilliam, Delia Perkins and Mary Perkins.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority is launching its 72nd Debutante Cotillion for March 2020. During these transitional times in society, the chapter is still working to teach young ladies virtues, etiquette, social graces, self-esteem, fashion sense and traditional values.
The chapter members are Kim Riggins, president; Brenda Smith, treasurer; Joleesa Daniels, vice president; Shawnita Harper, financial secretary; Pamela C. Daniels, Lovie Rooks, parliamentarian; Mary Dawson, Maggie Gilliam, Bonnie Hough, Debora Powell, chaplain; Elizabeth Moore, historian; Evelyn Lawrence, Martha Noel, Delia Perkins, Evelyn Wilson, Stephanie Thorne, Sheila Williams, Grace Wilson and Alexia Kemp.
