The Harrison Family YMCA’s Togetherhood Volunteer Committee developed the idea this summer to show appreciation to educators by holding a teacher supply collection drive in the YMCA lobby and a Welcome Back Kickoff event for school staff at many schools throughout the district on their first day back, Aug. 12.

On this day, volunteers were lined up holding posters made by YMCA after school kids and passing out teacher supplies, all with smiles a mile long as the school staff approached the front entrances. Volunteers ranged from high school students to hospital employees, all excited to show their appreciation to our teachers.

This project went over extremely well with a total of 88 volunteers, 1,650 items donated and 28 schools including Bailey Elementary, Baskerville Elementary, Benvenue Elementary, Cedar Grove Elementary, Englewood Elementary, Fairview Elementary, M.B. Hubbard Elementary, D.S. Johnson Elementary, Middlesex Elementary, Nashville Elementary, Red Oak Elementary, Spring Hope Elementary, Swift Creek Elementary, Williford Elementary, Winstead Avenue Elementary, Edwards Middle, Nash Central Middle, Parker Middle, Red Oak Middle, Rocky Mount Middle, Southern Nash Middle, Nash Central High, Rocky Mount High, Southern Nash High, Northern Nash High, CITI High, Early College High School and Tar River Academy.

“We are more than pleased with the turnout of this volunteer project and the impact that it has had on everyone involved. I just want to sincerely thank all of our volunteers for helping us extend into the community and show these teachers how much we appreciate the dedication they have to our area youth,” said Jacquelyn Price, CEO of the Harrison Family YMCA. “I also want to give a big thanks to Celia Thiel, the Chair of our Togetherhood Committee for giving so much of her time and energy towards making this project possible. We could not have done it without you.” -
