The Word Tabernacle Church Youth Ministry along with neighboring churches have kicked off summer break by participating in a local program called Team252, which requires a commitment of selflessness.
Team252 is a mission experience organized by the Youth Pastors Coalition that serves the greater Rocky Mount area. This year, approximately 140 students ranging from sixth through 12th grade and over 20 chaperones will converge in downtown Rocky Mount to develop relationships, serve the community and invest in the region.
For the entire week, students and chaperones will stay together overnight, receive training on how to serve, and engage in conversations about race relationships and social justice as well as discuss how Christ compels disciples to live out the Gospel in order to mend hearts and lead people to Him.
The mission trip will serve the Bassett Center and the community around it, Ripple Effects and its home locations for individuals and families in transition, Rocky Mount Prep, Peacemakers and the food bank in Spring Hope. Each location will have a different service focus including construction, painting, organizing, Vacation Bible School, and evangelism.
While addressing the youth, parents and chaperones during a preparation focus meeting, the Rev. Kyle Johnson, associate pastor of Word Tabernacle Church, said, "We are firm believers that Jesus calls us to fulfill the Great Commission by going out into the world. We also understand that means we have to start at home." Johnson said, "Local missions are important because they allow us to serve Christ, develop sustainable relationships with organizations and people, and they help us connect with each other in a way that may not have been possible."
Johnson told student missionaries that it is mandatory they learn and are able to recite Philippians 2:1-11 in order to pass check-in requirements. The scripture teaches the importance of dying to our selfish nature so that others can be comfortable and experience Christ; the essence of missions.
Area senior pastors slated to impart knowledge and wisdom to the youth during nightly worship and reflections include the Rev. Luke Lunceford of First Baptist Church, the Rev. Keisha Spivey of Ripple Effects Ministry and the Rev. James Gailliard of Word Tabernacle Church.
