June 21 marks the start of summer, and it also marks a time when citizens and visitors can really enjoy what Rocky Mount has to offer, including summer camps, Denton Street Pool, Sunset Spray Park, Tar River Paddle trail, events and much more.

Registration is still being accepted for the Rocky Mount Parks and Recreation Department’s Summer Day Camp. The camp, taking place from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, is being held at the Booker T. Washington Community Center and the South Rocky Mount Community Center until Aug. 16.

During Summer Day Camp, participants ages 5 to 12 are involved in arts and crafts, outdoor sports, swimming, skating, field trips to amusement parks, overnight camping and other fun activities.

Kids may also enjoy their summer at Denton Street Pool. The pool is equipped with eight 25-yard competitive lanes, spray-ground elements, water slides and diving boards. Pool staff offer swimming lessons.

Sunset Spray Park is another big hit for the youth. Operating daily from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., Sunset Spray Park is a water park that also includes a bug ride and concessions offering popcorn, ice cream and snow cones. Additionally, Sunset Park is equipped with an Amusement Center comprised of an antique carousel and a historic miniature train. Entry fees for Sunset Park are $5 per visitor and include unlimited access to the spray park and amusements.

For those who wish to explore the waterways, summer provides a great opportunity to enjoy the Tar River Paddle Trail. The trail consists of 10 canoe and kayak access locations that connect over 20 miles of the Tar River and Stony Creek.

The Tar River Walking/Biking Trail is always a favorite too. The 3.9-mile trail allows travelers to see city landmarks and parks.

Aside from these amenities, family-friendly events are found in Rocky Mount during the summer, and admission to these events is FREE.

Lawn Chair Theatre is occurring at the Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences. Families are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs for movies like “Hotel Transylvania 3,” “How to Train Your Dragon-The Hidden World” and “Incredibles 2.” Visit www.imperialcentre.org for showtimes and additional information on this event happening monthly through Sept. 6.

The Imperial Centre is also the site for Downtown Live! featuring bands on the Imperial Centre lawn bi-weekly. Music starts at 6 p.m. for groups like The Tams, Jim Quick & Coastline, Legacy Motown Revue, The Catalinas and the Embers featuring Craig Woolard. Enjoy this live music until Sept. 12.

As always, Rocky Mount will celebrate the nation’s independence with the Independence Day Celebration on July 3 at the Rocky Mount Athletic Stadium. From 6 to 9 p.m., attendees can enjoy a musical performance from Rivermist, a North Carolina based band, activities and a fireworks display. Vendors will also be on hand for the celebration.

Summer is the perfect time for relaxation, vacations, exploration and more. Why not enjoy the summer right here in Rocky Mount by taking advantage of the city’s many amenities?
