On campus: Weekly catchup from college football's Week 10

Week 10 of the college football season involved plenty of high-scoring games, as well as several former local athletes turning in impressive defensive performances.

Let’s get into it.

Sherrod Greene, South Carolina: Greene, a Rocky Mount High grad, recorded six tackles in the Gamecocks’ 48-44 win over Ole Miss. The linebacker also had a half-tackle for loss. South Carolina next plays at noon this Saturday at Florida on ESPN.

Isaiah Gay, Illinois: Gay, a defensive lineman out of Northern Nash, made two tackles in the Illini’s 55-31 win over Minnesota. The win for Illinois snapped a three-game losing streak.

Tahj Deans, East Carolina: The former Southern Nash standout and Pirates wide receiver did not record any stats in ECU’s 59-41 home loss to Memphis.

Houshun Gaines, Virginia Tech: The Nash Central grad and Hokies defensive end made one tackle and was credited with two quarterback hurries in a 31-21 loss to Boston College. The Hokies have now lost two in a row and three of their past four games. A come-from-behind win over North Carolina was the lone victory during this losing stretch.

Nadir Thompson, Virginia Tech: Former Southern Nash star and Hokies true freshman will miss the remainder of the season due to injury. He will redshirt this season.

Kendrick Bell, Charleston Southern: The true freshman running back out of Southern Nash had one carry for nine yards, and added six receiving yards on one reception in a 37-3 loss to Monmouth.

Dae’one Wilkins, Furman: Southern Nash grad and Paladins freshman did not record any stats in a 16-10 win over Chattanooga.

Marcus Williams Jr., Appalachian State: Mountaineers sophomore and SouthWest Edgecombe grad had a huge game on the ground in a 23-7 win over Coastal Carolina. Williams ran for 106 yards and a touchdown, and added one reception for 13 yards.

Jack Wellenhofer, UNC Charlotte: The Rocky Mount High grad and UNC-Charlotte redshirt sophomore did not participate in a 14-3 loss to Tennessee.

Trey Smelcer, UNC Charlotte: The freshman punter out of Rocky Mount Academy did not participate in a 14-3 loss to Tennessee.

Artavious Richardson, N.C. A&T: The former Rocky Mount High defensive lineman and the Aggies’ redshirt freshman did not record any stats in a 37-20 win over Norfolk State.

Alex Nobles, North Carolina: The freshman linebacker from Nash Central did not participate in the Tar Heels’ 38-28 loss to Georgia Tech. Nobles has not played yet this season for UNC.

NCAA Division II

Antwoin Pittman, Winston-Salem State: The running back out of North Edgecombe ran for 52 yards on four carries in the Rams’ 51-21 win over Fayetteville State. It was the final game of the regular season for Winston-Salem State. Pittman also made a tackle on defense.

Broderick Caudle, Fayetteville State: The free safety out of Rocky Mount High recorded three tackles in a 52-21 loss to Winston-Salem State.

Thomas Battle, Fayetteville State: The defensive lineman from Rocky Mount High did not play in the Broncos’ 51-21 loss to Winston-Salem State.

NCAA Division III

Jonathan Stallings, N.C. Wesleyan: The Faith Christian grad and place kicker did not play in the Bishops’ 50-29 loss to Huntingdon. NCWC has two more games left in the regular season, both on the road.

Joshua Carter, Methodist University: The senior wide receiver out of Rocky Mount High was all over the field for Methodist in a 48-38 loss to LaGrange. Carter finished with a team-high 74 receiving yards with a touchdown. Carter also had one rush for no yards, and even attempted a pass in the loss.
